How to Pause Autoscaling and Use Maintenance Mode in Judoscale
There are two ways to prevent Judoscale from managing an entire app’s scale temporarily, without having to disable autoscaling for each process:
- Pausing stops autoscaling without changing the scale of your processes.
- Maintenance mode stops autoscaling and also scales your workers down to zero.
Pause autoscaling
Pausing stops autoscaling for all the processes on the app, without changing their scale. It’s useful when you want your scale to stay put for a while, such as during load tests, incidents, or deploys that may cause unexpected scaling, so Judoscale doesn’t react to unusual traffic or metrics. You can pause for a set time, or until you resume it.
Pausing autoscaling
Visit your team dashboard, click “Settings” beside the app you want to pause, and choose how long to pause, in minutes, hours, days, or weeks, or until you resume it:
You can still update your app and autoscale settings while paused.
An alert will be displayed throughout the app, as a reminder that autoscaling is paused:
Resuming autoscaling
A timed pause resumes on its own when it ends. To resume earlier, or if you paused until resumed, visit the app’s settings again, and click “Resume Autoscaling”:
Judoscale will resume autoscaling for the app right away, so your processes may scale up or down soon after, based on their current metrics.
Maintenance mode
Maintenance mode stops autoscaling for all the processes on the app, and also shuts down workers by scaling them down to 0. It’s useful for scheduled maintenance, such as infrastructure or database upgrades, where you don’t want anything running for some period of time.
Maintenance mode is not meant for deploys or releases. Autoscaling normally handles those fine, and if one causes unexpected scaling, pause autoscaling instead.
Enabling maintenance mode
Visit your team dashboard, click “Settings” beside the app you want to enable maintenance mode, and toggle maintenance mode “On”:
Judoscale will pause autoscaling for the app, and automatically scale all the worker processes with autoscaling enabled down to zero.
🚨 Warning
Updates to the app and autoscale settings will be rejected while in maintenance mode.
An alert will be displayed throughout the app, as a reminder that maintenance mode is enabled:
Disabling maintenance mode
Visit the app’s settings again, and toggle maintenance mode “Off”:
Judoscale will resume autoscaling for the app, and attempt to scale the worker processes with autoscaling enabled back to their previous scale values.
🚨 Warning
In case there’s any error from the platform trying to scale the processes down or up, maintenance mode will still be enabled/disabled, and we’ll ask you to review the scaling.
